i am in a thousand winds that blow

all that was, will always have been, somehow never again

I had a dream my life would be
so different from this hell I’m living
so different now from what it seems
now life has killed the dream I dreamed

Even if I’m a bit wary, I can’t pretend I’m not excited that my favourite musical has been made into a new film. However, I’m just going to pretend that Phillip Quast is forever playing Javert.

Wonderful read, Rae!

I was a theater kid before I was a journalist, and then for a time I was both, and you can all see which won out in the end, but my heart still knows and feels the pull of the theater life. It’s probably why I’m so intrigued by and enamored with Team StarKid. They’re fascinating, both in terms of how they create and collaborate, as well as how they have been able to forge this digital to physical connection with a fan base. It’s great when pop culture can be an inspiration, that’s a driving force in what I do and I love seeing others succeed at it.
The StarKids were kind enough to give me and my photographer incredible access to a day of their tour in Los Angeles, allowing me the space to be an ethnographer (ironically for their archeology-themed show!) but not a fly on the wall – the reason so many people love them is you can’t help but love them. It’s very easy to feel awkward or out of place when you’re “the journalist” and you’re spending so much time with “the subjects,” and on the flip side there’s a point where you can feel “too close.” I’m so glad they gave me the space to feel neither.  I’m excited to share my story and Joseph’s beautiful photos (I know, really, that the photos are the liquid gold for fandom and you’ll reupload them to Tumblr, but click on Billboard please so I can prove you enjoyed it) of what a day in the life of Team Starkid is like with their fans.  Thank you Pat, Samara, Brian H, Brian R, Joey, Joe, Dylan, Meredith, Lauren, Jim, Jaime, Charlene, Megan, Tomek, Dave, Clark, Darren, Corey, Sarah, June, Liam, Julia and whomever I’m forgetting because there are a million of you. You’re totally awesome.
Ask is open as always.  If you want to know what Joey Richter smelled like I can already tell you it was “pork bbq.”

The StarKids exist straddling a very fine line between Theater and Rock and Roll. Rock stars headlining House of Blues across the U.S. don’t load their own gear, and theater productions don’t have roadies. But StarKid has always been a meeting point for the grand new world order of notoriety and the established culture of celebrity. In the last seconds before they’re due on stage, Joe and Darren start singing a parody to one of their own songs, substituting the word “fart” for a key lyric, and soon the whole crew is harmonizing, transcending from a passing fancy to a moment. It’s sophomoric, but if you put 1,000 monkeys in a room with typewriters, eventually one of them will produce Shakespeare. StarKid isn’t aiming for the Bard, but they’re adept at taking the absurd, the weird and simply what they find collectively funny and tapping into something that inspires their audience of digital natives to embrace the wacky and transform it into their own narrative. Their jokes inspire GIFs and art and parody in their own right, and then circles back to engage in the real world, and ouroboros of pop culture.

They’re the new fame.

This article hits the nail on the head, doesn’t it?

Have there ever been any inter-StarKid hookups?

  • Brian: We hook up all the time. It’s easy and we’re all friends who love each other. I try and hook up with everyone as often and in as many different places as possible. It keeps it fun, ya know? I’ll call Meredith and say, ‘Wanna hook up for a bike ride?’ or Lauren and I will hook up at Trader Joe’s. I hook up with Joe and Dylan all the time. We hook up at restaurants, movies, sporting events. They’re the best to hook up with ‘cause they’re just down for anything. In fact, we’re all gonna hook up at a party tonight. Should be fun.

Julia stands in the middle of the empty HOB floor dancing along like an especially well-meaning pageant mom on a really strange edition of Toddlers and Tiaras.

JULIA.

When I saw her on Tuesday she was doing something similar. Oh man, Julia’s the greatest.

Look at how proud his parents are. Look at his dad. They’ve been with him through all of this. They watched his eyes light up when he discovered music. They heard him sing his first song. Maybe they would stop by his bedroom every now and then and listen to him write his own music through the door. Now they’re watching his dreams come true. They’re watching their little boy do everything he ever wanted. I can’t imagine the amount of pride they must have. That’s their baby
